Texts: AKRON WOMAN, 92, IS SUMMONED BY DEATH ---- Rites Arranged For Mrs. Phoebe C. Thornton, Long Resident Of City ---- Death of Mrs. Phoebe C. Thornton, 92, of 1475 S. Main st., marked the passing of one of Summit county's oldest native residents. Mrs. Thornton had seen Akron grow from a small village to one of the nation's industrial centers and the farm on which the home where she died, stood, sub-divided and be- come a populous residential center. Her parents came to Ohio from Pennsylvania in a covered wagon when Akron was but five years old. They settled on a farm in Springfield twp., one mile south of Krumroy, and it was there that Mrs. Thornton was born. Husband Dies In 1905 On Nov. 18, 1860, she was married to Levi Thornton, who died in 1905, and they moved to a 62-acre farm near which the late home stood. Only farm houses could be found south of South st., at that time. Her children recall she made tallow can- dles, the only illumination available at that time. Thornton st. is named after the family, the children said, and the farm is part of what is now known as Firestone Park and Thornton Heights addition. Leaves Four Children Mrs. Thornton leaves four children, W.H. Thornton, 1445 S. Main st., Mrs James T. Wellock, 1475 S. Main st., Mrs. William Neal, 22 W. Long st., and Charles Thornton, 1495 Hite av., 10 grandchildren, seven great-grand- children, and one great-great-grand- child. Funeral services will be held at the home Saturday afternoon at 1:45 o'clock and at St. Paul's Lutheran church at 2 o'clock. Rev. John O. Yoder will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.
