John was a hunter and outdoorsman He gave Tom Thornton a bird gun.
Texts: Testimonial on Akron City Club I seem to recall visiting a club downtown with Uncle John and Aunt Olive, quite a few years earlier than the lunch with Aunt Olive at the Women's Club. I think this might have been after my graduation from OSU in 1969 or Harvard in 1971. On one of those occasions, Uncle John gave me a nice black briefcase - the kind you seldom see any more that is entirely leather, opens very wide at the top and holds about 6-8" worth of documents. I suppose these must have been popular with lawyers. Oh, I think I know when I received that briefcase. I spent six weeks or so in law school (OSU) before dropping out to attend Harvard. I think he must have given me the briefcase when I entered law school. Uncle John was not the kind of uncle who was very popular with small children, but he was a tremendous guy to spend an evening with as an adult. I'm sorry that I only had a couple of those. He was very knowledgeable about American Indians, particularly those from Ohio. I'm sure he would have had many tales to tell of his days as Asst. District Attorney in Akron had I only asked about them. One of my back-burner projects is to comb through Akron Beacon Journals from the years he was working and see what I can turn up about his career. I'll bet there's quite a bit on him. (I'd also like to do the same for our grandfather. He also worked as a lawyer - at least for a while - and I'd like to find out what happened to his career. If my mom knows, she's not telling. Have you ever heard anything?) SOURCE: Hal Offutt e-mail to TLT, 15 Oct 2005
