On Monday 1 July, 1996, Olive moved into a senior citizens' complex,
Chambrel at Montrose, 100 Brookmont, Akron. In cleaning house,
Marilyn found a 53-year old clipping of COT (see COT text),
"Thornton Now First Lieutenant" out of the O'Neil's paper, where
John had worked, too.

Talked to Mom the other day and she said one of ya'll
might go to Aunt Olive's funeral. If you do please extend
my deepest condolences to both Diane and Marilyn, and let
them both know how much Mom and I enjoyed our visit with
Aunt Olive in July.
She was talkative and outspoken as usual, and still
enjoyed reading. She had a bookcase full of paperback
novels that she had read and was working on a new one.
Always learning and enjoying life! She was a wonderful
woman. Hope we can enjoy our senior years as much as she
did!

We were very glad we all got to see Aunt Olive before she
died.. she was pretty good considering her age.. still got
dressed up to go to dinner at the nursing home even.. thought
that was something.

As reported, I am traveling on business (flew into Orlando on
Sunday) so sadly I will miss the funeral tomorrow. I have
many nice memories of Aunt Olive and Uncle John: many visits
to the 1820 Wiltshire home, picnics, Xmas gatherings, a nice
lunch at the Akron City Club (Akron Women's Club?), etc. etc.
In later years I had a couple of amazing discussions with her
about the stock market. She really knew her stuff! Most
recently I saw her in Jan/Feb at Windsong when Mom was there;
the three of us had one especially nice visit where Aunt
Olive was just as alert as she would have been twenty or
thirty years ago. We should all be thankful that she passed
away with no visible pain.
My Mom appears to to be taking it well, but I think she must
be very sad in private; it can't be easy to be the last
survivor of a family of seven. Mom mentioned that Olive always
treated her especially well. Olive was almost exactly five
years older so she probably thought it was her duty to take
special care of little Bessie. Diane mentioned that Olive
was responsible for naming Mom Bessie. I guess it was a
pretty normal name in 1913!
