Willis Welsy Thornton [1871 - 1929]: journalist.  Born in Akron,
Ohio, Willis Welsy Thornton was educated in the public schools and
began his career as a reporter for the Akron Beacon.  Later he moved to
Cleveland, securing a position with the Cleveland Press.  In 1902,
Thornton was made business manager of the paper, and in 1904, when
the Press joined with other newspapers in Toledo and Columbus to form
the Scropps-Mccrae League, Thornton was made president of the League.
Newspapers in Des Moines and Oklahoma were later added to the League.
After achieving a marked success as a business manager of newspapers,
Thornton retired in 1925.
